Parties, live music and crafts for the kids take over the lineup of things to do in Springfield this weekend to celebrate the New Year. Here are five events to attend: 35th annual First Night Celebration Artists and performers will take the stage Saturday during the 35th annual First Night Celebration. The family friendly event will take place at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, 420 S. Sixth St., from 1 to 10:30 p.m. A performance of Robert Davis’ ‘Watch Night … A Celebration,’ a play recalling the vigil prior to the publication of Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, will be performed at 4 p.m. at Union Baptist Church, 1405 E. Monroe St. A free children’s stage and craft area will be available from 1 to 4 p.m. Other performances begin at 6 p.m. with admission at $20 for adults and $5 for youth.
